One of the joys of discovering the internet is the online friends who have come into my life. One such friend is Joan Browning, who initially contacted me when I was involved with the SS United States Foundation. Ms. Browning had the good fortune as a child to travel to and from Europe aboard my favorite ship, the storied SS United States, both east and westbound in April and June of 1955 respectively. Sailing with her family in tourist class, she has incredibly fond memories of the experience, and was kind enough to share those with me, all relayed in her characteristically eloquent fashion and with the enthusiasm that such an experience impressed upon her as a child. The voyages were both magical for her, and she has been very generous in sharing the snapshots and slides from her family archives which are featured here on this page. She has told me that she still gets a thrill visiting these images on the site, and so I have re-instated this newly re-designed page. The images include shots taken by the ship's photographer, as well as family stills and color slides. Ms. Browning was very generous in sending the shots to me for scanning, and I returned them along with a CD of the images in exchange for permission to use them. Click on the thumbnails to enjoy a larger version of each image, or click here for a slideshow! Enjoy! |
