Of all the plans to bring the SS United States back to life, perhaps the most exhaustive and realistic were those of developer Richard Hadley in the late 1970s. His plan to convert the ship to a traveling time-share condominium ended with the disastrous auction of her fittings in 1984 -- the beginning of the subsequent pillaging of the vessel that accelerated her decline. I was recently loaned a very impressive and comprehensive five volume set of oversized paperback books dated July,1980 covering every detail of the proposed conversion, with deck plans, interior and exterior renderings, and descriptions of the decor of each room. Even the proposed menus are included. Hadley was serious about reinventing the Big U, and put a lot of time and money into her redevlopment. These renderings show various public spaces as they would have appeared on the New United States, and certainly reflect the design aesthetic of their time period. Personally, I’m of mixed minds about this conversion: on the one hand, it would have kept the ship around as a working vessel for future generations, on the other, it would have rendered the ship’s interiors virtually unrecognizable, losing much of her history in the process. Who knows where the SS United States would be today had he succeeded in this venture. Meanwhile, enjoy these drawings and photos. And please, be a good netizen and DO NOT COPY THESE IMAGES. Thanks.
