In late 2008, noted maritime artist Ken Marschall graciously made this important collection of images available to me. Ken and a friend were granted access to the SS United States in 1986 -- two years after the infamous auction -- and these images are heartbreaking to say the least. Much of the ship was still intact, but she looked as if a hurricane had ravaged her insides. The disrespect Our Girl has suffered over the years is mind boggling. I would say “enjoy” these images, but that’s hardly the word. Instead, perhaps “appreciate?” They document a sad chapter in our flagship’s saga. NOTE: I’ve marked each image out of respect for Mr. Marschall. Several images from my own collection have ended up all over the internet and in videos on YouTube. Please, be a good netizen and DO NOT COPY THESE IMAGES. Thanks. (All images this page copyright Ken Marschall)
