One of
the most perfect vessels ever conceived, the Holland-America Lines'
SS Nieuw Amsterdam of 1938 is a close contender for the number 2
slot on my top 10 list, but docks in the 3rd position due to sentimental
favoritism (see #2). An added bonus to creating this website has
been an excuse to pour through my paper collection and rediscover just
how perfectly fabulous this ship was both inside and out.

The artwork aboard is seamlessly integrated
into the interiors and ranges in styles from traditional to contemporary
(1938). I'd love to know what became of many of these incredible
works when she was scrapped. The decor aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam
seemed cutting edge in the late '30s when she was introduced, but aged
beautifully into its own kind of mid-century moderne as the ship
continued to sail well into the 1950s. Her crisp, clean
superstructure and her magnificent interior design earn her a very solid
3rd!
