Ebay really is one of the marvels of the modern world. Ever since I found my house and have been furnishing it, I have longed to acquire real art pieces from my favorite liners. I scored with the Austen Purves birds from the SS United States, but I was almost more excited one recent morning while doing my usual eBay ritual, when I stumbled across not one but two sculptures from my beloved SS United States by noted American artist Gwen Lux, with a high but reasonable "buy it now" price. After an anxious moment, I took the plunge -- and now, I'm so glad I did. The seller stipulated local pick up only, and since he was in Newport News, Virginia and I'm in Los Angeles, California, I called the ever amazing Craters and Freighters who took care of pick up, careful "art" packing, and delivery. Soon, I had paper cut outs on the walls of my SS United States guest room, gleefully repositioning until I found just the right placement (with great thanks to my partner Mark!). Here are a few pics of the sculptures in their new home. What I really want to find are pictures of the pieces in situ aboard the ship, but so far, I've found nothing. If you have any pics that you'd be interested in providing, please email me. In the meantime, click on any picture for a larger view and enjoy!
