Continuing our pastiche of ocean liner home movies, here are a few more gems from my collection. On this page, we have a trip aboard the SS Majestic in 1931, complete with homemade titles by the filmmaker. The music with this film is Happy Days Are Here Again by Ben Selvin and His Orchestra (1930) from the Proarte American Legends Series Compact Disc Brother Can You Spare a Dime? Next up take a trip in color aboard the Holland-America ship SS Volendam in 1937 accompanied by the Casa Loma Orchestra's version of San Sue Strut (1930) from the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces 1930s Jazz Big Bands. Next just for fun is a film I call Boat Trip. It's great black and white footage taken aboard an unidentified steamer in the late '20s or early '30s, including some wicked and rather violent looking deck games. If you can identify this ship, please email me! This is set to the tune of Skirts by Billy Cotton & His Band, from The Great Dance Bands Play Hits of the Thirties. Finally, some fabulous 16mm black & white footage of the Matson Line's Malolo and Mariposa, date unknown, set to Beachcomber, from the Hi-Fi Caribbean Travelogue album. Look for more soon and enjoy! |
