While in New York City in November, 2005, a dear friend took me to see a public work of art which I had never heard of. What a treat it turned out to be! Located in Clinton Cove Park, by the 58th Street Pier, is a large patina bottle with several portholes along the side. It is called Private Passage and was created by the artist Malcolm Cochran. But the real treat comes when you look inside. There, recreated in sleek stainless steel that creates the illusion of a black and white photograph, is a self-contained art deco living space which was inspired by staterooms aboard the venerable Queen Mary. My first thought was what a lovely way to cross the Atlantic (if you could keep it from rolling!), or what a fantastic camper it would make if mounted on wheels. A guy can dream, right? Most of the pictures here were taken with my cell phone camera (it's all I had with me at the time) through the glass portholes, so forgive the glare, and the one in the lower right is credited to the online source where I found it, and contains a hyperlink to the corresponding site. To learn more about this intriguing work, click here or here. To see some quality pictures, click here. Enjoy! |
